Thinning Trees to Let Light into the Forest

I used to think that having more trees meant a better natural environment with more greenery.

However, this is not always the case.

Especially for forests that have been previously planted by humans, it is important to thin the trees to prevent the forest or mountain from having too many trees.

If the trees are too close together, each tree may not receive enough sunlight or have enough space for their roots to grow.

This can result in weaker and smaller trees that are more susceptible to diseases.

Trees can also easily become sick if there are too many and the airflow is poor.

Therefore, it is necessary to thin the trees at the appropriate time, especially after reforestation, to ensure a healthy environment for the trees.

However, due to the decline in demand for domestic timber and lower prices, many forests and mountains are left unhealthy without thinning in Japan.

This time, we conducted thinning in the area near where we usually stay in the forest to allow more light to enter the forest.

By doing this, we believe we have created a healthier environment for the trees. 🙂
