I’ve started maintaining an abandoned forest near my house.

Forest in Japan

I don’t know how many years has past since this forest got abandoned.

What is troublesome is this bamboo grasses.

They’re very fertile, and spread out widely suppressing other plans.

We need to cut them down otherwise it will get difficult for us to get in the forest again.

The best season to cut these grasses in forest in Japan is the summer, especially during the period called “Doyou”.

“Doyou” is a period of 18 days before the season changes. We have four seasons in Japan, and they have completely different climate each other.

Doyou in the summer in 2020 is around 7/19~8/6.

Weeds grow the most in the summer, so it is the best to cut them down when the summer ends because they will have no energy left to grow later or next year if they are cut down after using their all energy to grow as much as they can.

I cut the bamboo grasses down, but they come up soon in a few days.

It’s because I think they‘ve kept a lot of energy in their roots not being cut for a long time, so we need to cut them down again and again.

Summer gets quit hot in Japan. It gets around 37℃ in this area.

It is even dangerous to work outside during the daytime for a long time that we should avoid it.

I‘m trying to work early in the morning or evening with a weed cutter. It is comparatively cooler, but still so hot that I sometimes feel like falling down.

I wish the best season to mow in forest was in the spring or fall, which is comfortable to work outside , but unfortunately it doesn’t work that way, so it can‘t be helped.

Although the best season has ended, I will keep maintaining the forest with weed.
